Number of Different NPS Cancellation Stamps: 18 (Wow!) MI-III-1 STAMP TEXT:
This stamp is available at the Calumet Tourism Council which is easy to find at 25790 Red Jacket Road, Calumet, MI 49913. Calumet is a small town and easy to get around in. This is the main stamp for the Keweenaw National Historical Park as all the other stamps are listed as "Cooperating Sites". There is no "Park Headquarters" yet for this site, but I am told things may be changing soon according to a friendly e-mailing ranger. On Rudi's list, this stamp is supposed to be replacing the Cooperating Site stamps, but that was not the case during my visit in August of 2003. MI-III-2 STAMP TEXT:
This stamp is available at 340 6th St., Calumet, MI 49913.
The hours for this site are tricky on the weekend. I had to make an appointment
by e-mail for a Sunday stop as volunteers are in charge then. Take a moment to
look around and consider donating to keep it open.
MI-III-3 and MI-III-4 STAMP TEXT:
. The Copper Range Historical museum is located in downtown South Range, MI. It
is on the corner of Trimountain and Champion roads. The hours are limited though
from 12-4 Monday through Saturday. MI-III-5 STAMP TEXT:
This stamp is located in the Coppertown Museum desk (at Coppertown USA) which is right across the street
from St. Anne's Keweenaw Heritage Center (Stamp # MI-III-11). The address is
101 Red Jacket Road, Calumet, MI 49913. The gift shop is worth looking at for
neat copper items. A map and hours information is available
here: MI-III-6 STAMP TEXT:
This stamp is brutal to obtain. Expect to put up a fight. The owner of the site doesn't
like to give out the stamp unless you take the self-guided mine tour. I did not
and refused to as I wasn't interested. I obtained it from the wife who parted
with it reluctantly. I'm told if you get the husband, you're out of luck. Tell
them they're playing favoritism (Illegal! It's discrimination.) as you know of
others who got it without taking the $9 tour. You'll probably end up walking out
with it. Regardless, it's 12 miles south of Copper Harbor on US-41. It 's a gravel road leading to the site. If you're
looking for some excitement, continue on the gravel road before the split to the
mine for about 5 miles and you'll end up at Eagle Harbor (Stamp # MI-III-10). I
did, it was pretty entertaining as the locals do about 60 mph down it! It's a
fast way of connecting between the sites if you're going for all the stamps in
one day as I did.
MI-III-7 STAMP TEXT:
This stamp is available at the Entrance Station to Fort Wilkins State Park which is to the East of Copper Harbor. You'll drive by an odd beach along the way past Copper Harbor, MI which is worth stopping at. The beach is formed by 1 inch black/brown round worn stones.
MI-III-8 STAMP TEXT:
This is one of the more difficult stamps to obtain for this NHP, but not on par with the Delaware Copper Mine stamp (MI-III-6). Unfortunately, you're on your own for figuring out the hours for this site. I believe when I went, it was open on Sunday from 12-4, but varies as it is staffed by volunteers. This was the information I had from the headquarters at the time: Open Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday Noon-4PM. Call the headquarters and they'll be able to figure it out for you. If you are heading north on M-41, it is 11.9 miles after the Baraga State Park to a blue sign on your left stating "Finnish Homestead Museum 6 miles". Turn left at the sign. Follow the signs further down this road until it turns to dirt. The signs are nailed up to trees from here. If another car comes the opposite direction, you'll have to back the other way. Don't get spooked, it's only about a 1/2 mile of dirt road driving. Just be careful, the picture below shows the conditions. I'm told this stamp is also available at the headquarters in Calumet, but I was unable to confirm it. Here is a great picture website for the site: http://www.pasty.com/crhm/pages/hanka/hanka.html
MI-III-9 STAMP TEXT:
This stamp is located at 5500 Highway M-26, Lake Linden, MI 49945. As it is
part of a museum, there is a fee associated with this stamp and a hard one to
avoid. They ask for $8 per person which is excessive if you're not really
interested in the exhibits. As the stamp is located at the front desk, you can
try asking for it and avoiding the charge. I decided to pay and look around as
some of the antiques I thought were quite interesting. Hours and information is
available here:
http://www.houghtonhistory.org/
MI-III-10 STAMP TEXT:
This stamp is found at yet another museum and available in the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. (Eagle Harbor, MI). This is a very small town, so finding the light house is not a problem. (Note: a shortcut from the Delaware copper mine, MI-III-6, leads to this site. See the description above.) Information and hours are available here: http://www.keweenawhistory.org/calendar.html There is a $4 fee which I avoided by asking for just the stamp and not the lighthouse tour. A lighthouse bonus stamp is also available for this site and pictured below:
MI-III-11 STAMP TEXT:
This is a new stamp for this NHP and located at 25880 Red Jacket Road,
Calumet, MI 49913 and right next to a variety of other stamps in downtown
Calumet, MI. The official designation for this site is "Heritage Center - St.
Anne's Church", so it is placed here alphabetically. The open times are limited
and subject to volunteer hours, but more information is available here:
http://www.pasty.com/heritage/index.html MI-III-12 STAMP TEXT:
This is another one of the most difficult stamps to obtain for this NHP. The stamp is not located at the Inn and is not worth your time visiting. The owner has decided not to deal with the NPS Cancellation stampers, so head over to the Calumet Tourism Council at 25790 Red Jacket Road, Calumet, MI 49913 and get it there. I was able to contact a friendly ranger who mailed me the stamp as the site was not open when I went to see if I could obtain it there. I'm told it is readily available to everyone because of the problems they have had with the Inn. If you're interested in reading about another stamper's run-in with this Inn, visit: http://www.danielcohen.org/100days/parks/parks.htm. MI-III-13 STAMP TEXT:
This is a simple stamp to grab. Just visit the entrance station to McLain State Park which is located eight miles north of the City of Hancock on M-203. Tell them you're just after the stamp and you can avoid the entrance fee unless you're intent on visiting. More information is available here: http://www.ring.com/travel/dnr/sp_mclai.htm MI-III-14 STAMP TEXT:
Here's a fun one to obtain. When I visited, there was no sign of any staff and the stamp was in a cardboard box on the table along with the orange ink pad. There was also an infestation of flies within the main building (essentially the VC) where the stamp is located. The site is near Rockland, MI (about 4 miles South). A little more information is available here: http://www.ontonagonmi.com/oldvictoria/ MI-III-15 STAMP TEXT:
This stamp is located quite a distance from Calumet and 6 miles West from Silver City, MI.Drive to the Visitor Center and grab the stamp at the Information Desk. The hours are excellent if you're trying to make this stamp the last for the day as they're open till 6PM and sometimes till 9PM! More information is available here: http://www.exploringthenorth.com/porkiesum/summer.html MI-III-16 STAMP TEXT:
This stamp is easy to grab and available at the separate gift shop building with plenty of parking. No fees, but you may have to ask for the stamp if it's not sitting out. A great website related to the site is found here: http://quincymine.com/ MI-III-17 STAMP TEXT:
(Stamp Courtesy of Dick Schaefer) I missed the open hours for this stamp and will have to return at a later date. However, this stamp is available at the Gift Shop Desk at the Michigan Technological University, 1400 Townsend Drive, Houghton, Michigan 49931-1295. A great website for information is available here: http://www.museum.mtu.edu/ MI-III-18 STAMP TEXT:

This was the first stamp I ever missed where I could
actually see it through the window. What a disheartening feeling. The fire
station is located at 327 Sixth St., Calumet, MI, 49913. The hours are only from
Noon-3PM! Good luck. A little more information is available
here.
